NEWPORT - NEWPORT READS! PEACE LIKE A RIVER
NEWPORT READS! PEACE LIKE A RIVER
Marian Brown and Carol Fisher announce the selection of Leif Enger’s 2001 best-selling novel Peace Like a River for a community reads program. Fisher and Brown co-chair NEWPORT READS! a new program of the Newport Library Foundation.
“When you pick up this book, be ready for an incredible journey. You’ll go with the Land Family through great joy and many challenges as they grapple with the power of their love and the constrictions of a lawful society,” advises Carol Fisher.
Peace Like a River is a tale told by an 11-year-old Reuben Land whose teenage brother Davy has killed two men. The men had assaulted the Lands’ younger sister and threatened the lives of the family. Davy escapes from jail and the family go on a westward journey in search of him. Peace Like a River is their story, original and wonderfully written, with themes of family loyalty, faith, and redemption, a page-turner with humor and high stakes.
The Foundation encourages local book clubs to choose Peace Like a River as their March selection. “We want to plan a program for book clubs,” said Marian Brown, “so we hope they will get in touch with us.” According to Brown, book clubs that want to participate should call the library and leave the name of a contact person, email, phone number and a little information about the club. Book club registration will also be online through the Newport Library web site, www.newportlibrary.org .
Copies of Peace Like a River will be available at the Newport Public Library, and the Foundation has asked local book stores to stock it as well. In addition to the book club program, The Library Foundation will hold a Newport Reads Celebration during National Library Week, April 2 – 8, 2006.
Additional information will be posted at the library, on the library web site, and announced in local media. Call Marian Brown, 265-8664, Carol Fisher at 867-6143, or the Newport Public Library, 265-2153 if you have questions.
