Once again Driftwood Public Library brings to the readers of the greater Lincoln City area a literary series that has become regionally known among those "in print" and those who follow the works of Oregon authors.

Begun in 1994 as a one-time gift to the community from the Friends of the Library, following the move into the current library facility, the Oregon Legacy has become an annual event with its own following of local and area readers.

According to Driftwood Library Director and Legacy coordinator Sue Jenkins, "When the series started the Lincoln City community had very little to do on Sunday afternoons beyond what our natural resources and the local hostelries had to offer. The series was designed to help readers shake off the winter doldrums, and re-focus their minds from holiday overload and commercial entertainment.

Each year, Jenkins has gathered four authors to present and discuss their work in the Distad Reading Room. Each author is chosen for the relationship of their work to the Oregon landscape, whether that landscape is geographical, political, spiritual, or natural. Each presentation is designed to connect the reader with the author in an open dialogue of shared concerns.

The popular series, sponsored by the Driftwood Friends of the Library and the Inn at Spanish Head, begins its 12th year on Sunday, Jan. 8 with the appearance of Tracy Daugherty of Corvallis, winner of the Oregon Book Award.

Daugherty is a well-known Oregon author, having produced six books, and numerous articles. He is also the Chairman of the Creative Writing Department at Oregon State University. His latest work is "What Falls Away."

Each program lasts about an hour, beginning at 3 p.m. and will include a question and answer period to allow readers to get to know the authors in depth.

For further information about the series, contact Jenkins at 996-1251 or suej@lincolncity.org.
